Platinum thermocouple wire

A thermocouple is a temperature sensor in which two different wires are connected to calculate the temperature, based on the difference in voltage (Seebeck-effect). The type of thermocouple wire that will be applied, depends on the temperature range, the chemical inertness of the wire, and the desired accuracy. To measure temperatures higher than 800 °C, thermocouples with precious metal wires are used. The platinum and platinum-rhodium thermocouple wires of type B, R, and S offer high resistance to corrosion, have a long life span, and make among the most stable thermocouples in terms of reliability and accuracy. The different types of thermocouple wires have their own unique properties, resulting from the different alloys. IAM Drijfhout supplies high quality thermocouple wire type B, R, and S, and wire of special alloys and coatings. All our wires are calibrated with standard or special limits, and are supplied with a certificate meeting the international standards.

Thermocouples wire type B, R, and S

Thermocouples of type B, R, and S are widely applied in a variety of industries. They are typically used because of their high temperature range in the glass industry, but also in the metal industry to regulate melting and pouring processes. In other industries, they are used due to their accuracy and are, for example, used to calibrate analytical instruments. Other examples of applications are temperature regulations in pressurized water reactors in nuclear reactors, and in the semi-conductor industry at the production of wafers.

Type B

A type B thermocouple consists of two thermocouple wires: a positive leg with an alloy of 70% platinum and 30% rhodium, and a negative leg with an alloy of 94% platinum and 6% rhodium. Type B thermocouples are used to measure temperatures from 50 °C onwards in environments of high temperatures, that reach up to 1800 °C. The main advantage of type B is that no extra sensor is needed to compensate for temperature differences at the junction of the wires outside of the process. The standard type B thermocouple wire is available in different diameters between 0.25 mm and 1.00 mm.

Semi conductor Thermocouple wire

Type R

A type R thermocouple consists of two thermocouple wires: a positive leg with an alloy of 87% platinum and 13% rhodium, and a negative leg with an alloy of 99.99% platinum. Type R thermocouples are applied for accurate measurements between 0 and 1600 °C. The advantage of type R compared to type B, is that type R can be produced with class 1 tolerances, resulting in a high accuracy. The standard type R thermocouple wire is available in different diameters between 0.25 mm and 1.00 mm.

Type S

A type S thermocouple consists of two thermocouple wires: a positive leg with an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% rhodium, and a negative leg with an alloy of 99.99% platinum. Type S is, just as type R, applied for accurate measurements between 0 and 1600 °C. Type S and type R have almost equal properties and are the most applied thermocouples with precious metal wires. The standard thermocouple wire type S is available in different diameters ranging between 0.25 mm and 1.00 mm.
